From 1905 to Today — Over a Century of Craftsmanship

Chartered on October 1, 1905, Local 124 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) represents stagehands, technicians, and theatrical craft professionals serving Joliet’s entertainment industry. We are the second-oldest stagehand union in Illinois, with a proud history of excellence and adaptability.

We are the union Brothers and Sisters who construct, install, maintain, and operate lighting, sound equipment, scenery, and special effects—bringing life to concerts, theater, film, and live events across Will County. We also assist touring companies with wardrobe, merchandise, and backstage needs.

Since its founding in 1905, Local 124 —also known as the Joliet Stagehands —has adapted to the many significant changes within the entertainment industry. A prime example is the emergence of the film industry in the early 1900s, which created a demand for skilled projectionists and film production personnel. Joliet Stagehands raised the curtains at the magnificent Rialto Square Theatre in 1926, originally opened as a vaudeville movie palace. The world has evolved since then—and so has Local 124. Today, touring events include musicals, plays, concerts, game shows, stand-up comedy, and magic acts. Locally, we support community and private events such as gospel performances, fashion shows, dance recitals, pageants, graduations, and weddings. Big or small, we do it all!

Our expertise is trusted by theaters and venues throughout Will County and the greater Chicagoland area. Our year-round employment includes work at the Rialto Square Theatre. We also regularly serve the Paramount Theatre in Aurora and provide labor to the United Center, Allstate Arena, and the Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre (formerly First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre). Beyond the theater, Local 124 was the primary labor force behind the construction of Harrah’s Casino’s original temporary pavilion. We’ve partnered with the Chicagoland Speedway, Route 66 Raceway, and the Slammers Baseball Field. We also support concerts for the Village of New Lenox and events like the Taste of Joliet, sponsored by the Joliet Park District. Notably, we’ve installed every movie screen in Will County over the last 60 years.

Our mission remains clear: to ensure economic security and a safe work environment for our members. Through ongoing training and education, we provide the region’s most skilled, reliable, and professional stagehands.

Whether it’s a touring company or a local community event, LOCAL 124 IS PROUD TO BE THE HANDS BEHIND THE SCENES— making it all happen with expertise, precision, and pride.
